Using fertility control as a humane alternative to lethal wildlife population management.
Wildlife contraception offers a welfare-positive alternative to lethal population management in contexts where human-wildlife conflict or habitat constraints require intervention. Culling, while effective for population control, imposes obvious welfare costs on individual animals. Immunocontraception is not without welfare considerations - capture and darting for vaccine delivery causes acute stress - but the long-term welfare outcomes for both treated individuals and the broader population are generally superior to lethal management. Social and political acceptance of contraception over culling also supports broader conservation objectives.
