The development and limitations of current aquaculture welfare certification schemes globally.
Aquaculture certification has made significant progress in environmental sustainability but lags substantially behind in meaningful fish welfare assessment. Most existing schemes treat welfare as a subset of animal health, missing the broader behavioral and psychological dimensions that welfare science now recognizes as important. The challenge is compounded by the difficulty of assessing welfare in fish, which cannot communicate distress in ways immediately obvious to human observers. Next-generation certification schemes are beginning to incorporate behavior-based welfare indicators, but adoption is slow and consumer awareness limited.
