The welfare challenges and standards in the commercial farming of deer for venison and velvet.
Deer farming presents distinctive welfare challenges compared to conventional livestock because deer are minimally domesticated prey animals with strong wild behavioral tendencies. Their extreme flight responses and neophobia make routine handling procedures highly stressful, and inadequate handling facilities cause injuries and fatalities. Velvet antler harvesting, practiced primarily in New Zealand and Korea, was historically performed without anesthesia causing intense pain; mandatory sedation protocols represent a major welfare improvement but are not uniformly enforced globally. Species selection and handling system design are the highest-priority welfare interventions.
