Aquaculture Welfare in Africa

Developing fish welfare standards for the rapidly growing aquaculture sector in sub-Saharan Africa.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Aquaculture in Africa is experiencing rapid growth that, if not guided by welfare principles from the outset, risks embedding poor practices that will be difficult to reform later. The welfare baseline in many African fish farming operations is low, with inadequate attention to stocking density, water quality, and humane slaughter. However, the relatively early stage of industry development also represents an opportunity to establish welfare-positive practices before they become entrenched. Training programs, appropriate technology transfer, and welfare-inclusive certification schemes tailored to small-scale producers are the key intervention points.
