Horse Leisure Riding Welfare

Welfare considerations for horses used in recreational riding and leisure activities.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Leisure riding horses occupy an interesting welfare position - they may face less extreme performance pressure than competition horses, but may also receive less expert care and oversight. The quality of welfare for leisure horses depends heavily on owner knowledge and commitment, as the lack of competitive accountability means welfare problems may go undetected for longer. Trail riding and varied leisure activities can provide genuine enrichment for horses, but poor horsemanship, inappropriate rider weight, and inadequate farriery and veterinary care create preventable welfare problems. Education for leisure riders is the most impactful welfare intervention for this large horse population.
