Understanding and improving welfare for dogs that show reactive behavior toward triggers on leash.
Leash reactive dogs represent a welfare challenge both for the dog experiencing chronic stress and frustration, and for the owner-dog relationship that the behavioral problem strains. Reactivity is almost always a welfare signal - the dog is experiencing negative emotional states in response to triggers it cannot escape. Punitive approaches to reactivity cause additional welfare harm by increasing fear and suppressing warning signals. Evidence-based behavior modification using desensitization and counterconditioning addresses the emotional root cause and produces genuine welfare improvement alongside behavioral improvement. Management strategies that prevent trigger exposure protect welfare while training progresses.
