Meeting the specialized welfare needs of weasels, otters, and other mustelids in captivity.
Mustelid welfare in captivity is challenging due to the combination of high intelligence, intense behavioral activity, and specialized environmental requirements that vary significantly across the family. Otters are among the most demanding captive animals, requiring extensive water features, complex terrestrial environments, and frequent feeding schedules that many facilities cannot sustain. The high stereotypy rates seen in inadequate mustelid housing are evidence of severe behavioral frustration in animals with strong behavioral motivations that cannot be expressed. Accreditation standards for mustelid keeping have improved but implementation varies substantially across the range of facilities holding these species.
