Growing evidence and acceptance of barefoot horses in competitive equestrian sports.
Barefoot competition represents an evidence-based welfare alternative for sport horses where appropriate, challenging the assumption that metal shoes are necessary for performance. The welfare benefits of barefoot competition - improved hoof mechanism function, elimination of nail-related pathology, and better proprioception - are documented across multiple studies. The primary barrier to wider adoption is not physiological but cultural, with judges and venue operators in some disciplines resistant to or explicitly excluding barefoot horses. As competition results by barefoot horses at high levels accumulate, the evidence base for policy change in resistant disciplines grows stronger.
