Horse Leisure Riding: Welfare of the Everyday Horse

The welfare of leisure horses - the majority of the horse population in high-income countries - reflects everyday management decisions about housing, exercise, feeding, and social provision.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Leisure horse welfare reflects a tension between owner convenience and evidence-based care requirements. Stabling for owner-schedule convenience, over-feeding as affection expression, and insufficient exercise through busy owner lifestyles create predictable welfare problems. Obesity and laminitis, social isolation, and insufficient movement are the dominant welfare concerns. Education about realistic horse welfare requirements at point of acquisition would prevent many welfare failures. A horse requiring daily exercise, social companionship, and continuous forage access is not compatible with an owner able to commit only weekend visits.
