Wild Animal Welfare

Wild Animal Suffering: Ethics and Evidence

The welfare of wild animals is an emerging ethical frontier that challenges the traditional view that wild nature is benign and only human-caused suffering matters.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Wild animal welfare challenges the intuition that nature is good and only human interference causes suffering. The biology of natural ecosystems involves enormous quantities of suffering: predation, disease, starvation, and the deaths of billions of juvenile animals. Whether these harms are morally equivalent to human-caused suffering, and what if any obligations they create, is genuinely contested. At minimum, the welfare ethics of wild animals requires we avoid causing additional suffering through human activities, and encourages consideration of targeted interventions where suffering can be reduced without destabilizing ecosystem function.
