Reactivity in dogs - excessive barking, lunging, or aggression toward triggers - causes significant stress for the dog and owner, but evidence-based treatment is highly effective.
Reactive dogs are often misunderstood and mistreated because their behavior appears aggressive and is socially disruptive. But reactivity is usually an expression of fear - the dog is terrified and behaves aggressively because it has learned this works to make the frightening thing go away. The welfare of reactive dogs requires compassionate, evidence-based treatment that addresses the underlying fear rather than suppressing its behavioral expression. Punishment-based approaches that suppress the outward behavior without addressing fear worsen the underlying welfare state and can increase bite risk.
