Farmed Tilapia Welfare: Water Quality and Density

Tilapia is one of the most farmed fish species globally, and improving welfare in tilapia farming requires attention to water quality, stocking density, and handling practices.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Tilapia occupies an interesting welfare position: they are hardy, adaptable fish that survive conditions that would kill more sensitive species. But survival does not indicate good welfare. Tilapia in overcrowded conditions show chronic stress, increased aggression, and disease susceptibility that constitutes welfare harm even when mortality rates appear acceptable. The scale of tilapia farming - billions of fish annually - means even small welfare improvements per individual aggregate to enormous total benefit. Welfare standards for tilapia farming are currently minimal and should be developed alongside the rapidly growing industry.
