Sleep deprivation through excessive lighting is a significant welfare issue in broiler farming that EU regulations are beginning to address.
Broiler chicken sleep welfare was largely ignored until research demonstrated that sleep is as necessary for bird welfare as for mammalian welfare. Chickens have complex sleep patterns including slow-wave and REM sleep that serve restorative functions. Lighting regimes designed purely around feed intake maximization disrupted these patterns and caused chronic sleep deficit. EU regulatory changes requiring minimum dark periods represent important welfare progress, but the quality of dark periods - darkness depth, duration, and consistency - determines whether regulations deliver genuine welfare benefits.
