Camels used in tourism, racing, and agricultural work often experience significant welfare challenges. Growing scientific understanding of camel behavior is informing improved standards.
Camel welfare receives relatively little research attention compared to other working animals, yet camels serve essential roles in communities where alternatives are limited. Tourism camels face particularly acute welfare risks: high throughput, inadequate rest, and equipment not fitted for individual animals create cumulative welfare burdens. The Five Freedoms framework applied to working camels reveals systemic gaps: freedom from discomfort requires proper saddle fitting and shade; freedom from pain requires veterinary care and load limits; freedom to express natural behaviors requires social contact. Industry-wide change requires consumer pressure alongside local enforcement.
