Manatees face multiple serious welfare threats including boat propeller injuries, loss of warm water refugia, and algal blooms that reduce food availability.
Manatee welfare is characterized by threats that cause clear suffering at the individual level. Boat propeller strikes cause severe tissue damage and lasting physical impairment - scarring allows individual identification but also reflects chronic pain burdens. The 2021 algal bloom starvation event caused visible emaciation in thousands of manatees, many of whom died slowly. Cold stress as warm water sources become less reliable creates mass crowding events at industrial outflows. Each of these welfare challenges has identifiable human causes: boat traffic, nutrient pollution, and climate change. Meaningful welfare improvements require policy action alongside individual behavioral change.
