Blue whales, the largest animals ever to have lived, remain endangered despite whaling protection. Ship strikes, entanglement, and climate impacts on krill continue to pose serious welfare threats.
Blue whale welfare is shaped by their enormous size, longevity, and the scale of their physiological needs. An individual blue whale that becomes chronically malnourished due to krill decline suffers at a scale - in terms of the suffering capacity of a large-brained, long-lived social mammal - that warrants serious moral consideration. Ship strikes cause catastrophic injuries to animals that may survive for extended periods with severe trauma. The slow recovery of blue whale populations from near-extinction means each individual death represents a significant conservation and welfare event. Shipping lane management and krill ecosystem protection are the most impactful interventions available.
