Advances in livestock pain scoring systems are enabling farmers and vets to detect and treat pain more effectively, improving welfare across cattle, pigs, sheep, and poultry.
Pain scoring advances matter enormously because pain that goes undetected goes untreated. For decades, livestock pain was systematically underestimated - partly due to prey species hiding vulnerability, partly due to lack of objective tools. Validated grimace scales and behavioral scoring systems have transformed this, giving farmers and veterinarians reliable ways to identify animals in distress. The next frontier is automation: AI systems that continuously monitor facial expressions or movement patterns could catch pain episodes humans would miss. Ensuring these tools reach all farms, including smaller operations in lower-income regions, is critical for closing the global gap between knowledge and practice.
