Field shelters are essential for horses kept outdoors, protecting them from rain, wind, sun, and insects. Shelter design, placement, and management significantly affect horse welfare.
The outdoor horse welfare challenge is often underestimated: just because a horse has access to a field does not mean its welfare needs are fully met. Rain, wind, mud, insects, and sun each pose welfare challenges depending on the season and individual horse. Ponies and native breeds are often more weather-hardy than warmblood horses, but all benefit from shelter access. A particular welfare concern is group dynamics: shelters must be large enough and have multiple exits so dominant horses cannot monopolize them and exclude others. Welfare-conscious horse owners assess shelter use through observation rather than assumption - many horses use shelters far more than owners realize, especially during fly season.
