Osteoarthritis affects millions of dogs worldwide and is a leading cause of chronic pain. Modern multimodal management combining medication, weight control, and rehabilitation dramatically improves welfare outcomes.
Dog osteoarthritis represents an enormous treatable welfare burden that is systematically undertreated due to owner misattribution of pain signs to normal aging. The development of anti-NGF antibodies represents a genuine therapeutic advance - monthly injections providing pain control equivalent to or exceeding daily NSAIDs, with a different side effect profile. Combined with weight management (the single highest-impact intervention) and environmental modification, modern management can maintain arthritic dogs in good welfare for years beyond what was previously achievable. The welfare imperative is early recognition and proactive multimodal management rather than waiting for severe mobility impairment before intervening.
