Horse Navicular Syndrome: Welfare Management of a Chronic Painful Condition

Navicular syndrome (palmar foot pain) is one of the most common causes of chronic forelimb lameness in horses. Modern understanding has improved management options and welfare outcomes.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Navicular syndrome welfare management has been transformed by MRI diagnosis, which allows targeted treatment of specific lesions rather than generic management of a diagnostic category. A horse with navicular bursa inflammation requires different management from one with DDFT lesions on the navicular bone surface, and identifying which structure is affected enables much more effective welfare-oriented treatment. The chronic nature of the condition means that welfare monitoring must be ongoing: treatment effectiveness should be assessed regularly, exercise levels adjusted to match comfort, and owners supported in making difficult decisions about horses that can no longer be managed comfortably. Many horses with navicular syndrome live comfortably for years with appropriate management - the condition is manageable, not inevitably terminal.
