Hamster Welfare Reform: Why Small Cages Cause Suffering

Hamsters are among the most poorly housed pets globally. Scientific research has revealed that standard commercial cages cause chronic stress, and welfare standards are urgently needed.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

The welfare crisis for pet hamsters is extensively documented by scientific research yet largely ignored by the pet industry. Hamsters in standard commercial cages live in a state of chronic stress - unable to express natural burrowing, running, and foraging behaviors. The elevated stress hormones measured in these animals indicate genuine suffering, not merely suboptimal conditions. A hamster living in a 900cm2 cage for its 2-3 year lifespan is spending its entire life in conditions incompatible with good welfare. The solution is straightforward: larger cages with deep substrate, adequate wheel size, and appropriate enrichment. Consumer education and regulatory reform are both urgently needed.
