How animals are killed for food is a fundamental welfare issue. Modern stunning technology can make slaughter instantaneous and painless - but standards vary enormously and failures are common.
Slaughter is the final welfare moment for billions of animals, and how it is conducted matters enormously. Properly applied stunning renders animals instantly unconscious - pain and fear end in the same instant. But failures in stunning are common: captive bolt misplacement, inadequate electrical currents, and botched knife cuts all result in animals regaining consciousness or dying slowly. Water bath stunning leaves significant proportions of poultry inadequately stunned. Religious slaughter without stunning causes prolonged suffering as animals remain conscious while bleeding out. CCTV has demonstrated its value in improving compliance, but proper training, equipment maintenance, and robust inspection are equally essential.
