Lab-grown dairy products produced from animal cells or through fermentation offer significant welfare advantages over conventional dairy farming.
Conventional dairy production entails significant welfare costs: repeated pregnancies, separation of cow and calf, and for male calves often rapid slaughter or veal production. Lab-grown dairy alternatives, whether through precision fermentation or cell culture, could eliminate these welfare harms at scale. The welfare case for supporting lab-grown dairy development is strong. The key challenge is achieving cost competitiveness and regulatory approval to enable mainstream adoption.
