Cellular agriculture - producing meat and other animal products from cell cultures - could fundamentally transform the welfare implications of food production.
Cellular agriculture offers a potential pathway to produce familiar animal-derived foods while dramatically reducing the number of animals suffering in agriculture. The welfare implications are profound - billions of animals experiencing intensive confinement, pain, fear, and premature death in conventional agriculture could be spared. However, realizing this potential requires overcoming significant technical, regulatory, and social barriers. The welfare movement has strong reasons to support cellular agriculture development while continuing to reduce conventional animal product consumption.
