Commercial crab fishing involves significant welfare considerations for target crabs and bycatch species, from capture through to processing.
Crab fishing welfare concerns span from capture stress to processing methods. Live boiling of crabs has come under increasing regulatory scrutiny as evidence for crustacean pain responses has strengthened - the UK's Animal Welfare (Sentience) Act 2022 recognised decapod crustaceans as sentient. More humane killing methods including electrical stunning before boiling are increasingly available and should become the industry standard. The welfare of discarded bycatch crabs, handled and returned after prolonged confinement, is also a concern requiring attention.
