Oyster Farming and Welfare

Oyster farming is a rapidly growing aquaculture sector with complex welfare considerations given ongoing debates about bivalve sentience.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Oyster welfare debates center on the fundamental question of sentience. Oysters have simple nervous systems without a centralized brain, and current evidence does not support pain experience in the way vertebrates experience it. However, the precautionary principle and the sheer scale of oyster production (trillions annually) means the welfare question is worth taking seriously. The more established welfare concerns relate to bycatch and ecosystem impacts from wild harvest methods. Farmed oysters in cage or line systems are generally preferable from an ecosystem welfare perspective.
