Chicken Welfare at Slaughter

Slaughter conditions for billions of chickens annually vary enormously in welfare quality, with stunning method and handling practices making critical differences.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Chicken slaughter welfare encompasses the entire process from catching through to death - a period that can involve hours of cumulative stress and pain when poorly managed. Live shackling of conscious birds causes distress from inversion and handling, which is eliminated by gas stunning systems that render birds unconscious before any physical handling. Water bath stunning, when properly calibrated, can be effective, but equipment failures and incorrect electrical parameters leave a proportion of birds ineffectively stunned. Investment in welfare-improving slaughter technology represents one of the highest-impact single interventions in farm animal welfare.
