Technology including AI, sensors, and computer vision is transforming the ability to monitor farm animal welfare at scale and with greater objectivity.
Welfare monitoring technology offers the potential to dramatically improve the consistency and frequency of farm welfare assessment. Human welfare audits are infrequent, variable in quality, and subject to observer bias. Continuous automated monitoring using computer vision, acoustics, and wearable sensors can detect welfare problems earlier and more reliably. Early detection of lameness, respiratory disease, and behavioral indicators of pain or stress allows intervention before welfare problems become severe. The challenge is ensuring that technology investment translates to actual welfare improvement rather than merely better documentation of welfare problems that are not then addressed.
