Veganism is increasingly adopted for animal welfare reasons, with evidence supporting its potential to significantly reduce individual welfare impact on animals.
Veganism addresses animal welfare at its most fundamental level - reducing demand for products requiring animal suffering and death. The welfare calculus is clear for most animal products: eliminating consumption eliminates the demand that drives production welfare harms. However, welfare advocates recognize that veganism's welfare impact varies by context (some small-scale animal farming causes minimal welfare harm) and that reducing consumption of the highest-welfare-impact products (factory farmed meat and dairy) creates more welfare benefit than perfect veganism in all contexts. Welfare-motivated dietary change is most effective when framed as reducing harm rather than achieving purity.
