Bovine Viral Diarrhea Welfare Impacts

Bovine viral diarrhea virus causes widespread disease and welfare problems in cattle herds worldwide, with persistently infected animals being key to transmission.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

BVD causes multi-layered welfare problems. Acutely infected cattle experience fever, diarrhea, respiratory disease and mouth ulcers. Persistently infected animals suffer chronic immune failure, making them highly susceptible to every other disease they encounter - often living brief, miserable lives. Dams infected in early pregnancy may give birth to PI calves or suffer reproductive failure including abortion. National eradication programs that identify and remove PI animals from herds eliminate the major source of infection and dramatically improve welfare and herd health. Ireland, the UK and many EU countries have implemented BVD eradication schemes that show impressive welfare and economic gains within a few years.
