Transition Cow Welfare in Dairy Systems

The transition period around calving is the most welfare-critical time in a dairy cow's productive life, when most serious metabolic diseases occur.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

The transition period exposes the inherent tension between maximizing milk yield and protecting dairy cow welfare. High-producing cows face extreme metabolic demands as their bodies simultaneously recover from calving and ramp up milk production. Diseases like milk fever (hypocalcemia) cause muscle weakness, inability to stand and in severe cases, death. Ketosis causes liver damage and depression. These are not rare exceptions - they are the expected consequences of pushing cows to their biological limits. Addressing transition cow welfare requires both better nutritional management and honest reconsideration of whether current peak milk production levels are compatible with acceptable animal welfare.
