Plant-Based Leather Alternatives

Innovative plant-based leather alternatives made from mushrooms, cactus, pineapple and other plants are transforming fashion with animal-free options.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

The shift to plant-based leather addresses a significant animal welfare concern embedded in fashion. Leather production is not simply a byproduct of the meat industry - demand for leather creates economic incentives for cattle farming independent of meat markets, and involves its own welfare concerns in tanning (where hides from stressed or mistreated animals are processed). Plant-based alternatives, when produced sustainably, remove animals from the supply chain entirely. The welfare case for plant-based leather is strongest when the alternatives are also more environmentally sustainable - a condition met by some but not all current plant leather products. Consumer demand is driving rapid innovation in this space.
