Jet Ski and Powerboat Wildlife Welfare

Recreational powerboats and jet skis cause physical injury, acoustic stress and behavioral disruption to marine and freshwater wildlife in areas of heavy use.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Recreational watercraft cause real, measurable welfare harm to aquatic wildlife. Manatee propeller strikes are perhaps the most dramatic example - animals bearing multiple parallel scar sets from repeated boat encounters suffer severe injuries and chronic pain. Beyond direct collision, the acoustic disturbance from recreational boating stresses whales and dolphins that must communicate over the noise. Nesting waterbirds including loons, grebes and terns are disturbed repeatedly by boat wake, causing nest failure and displacement. In areas of high recreational boating pressure, the cumulative acoustic, physical and behavioral impacts create chronic welfare impairment for resident wildlife. Designating and enforcing wildlife protection zones and speed restrictions are effective welfare interventions.
