Lighting programs in poultry houses significantly affect broiler and layer hen welfare, influencing behavior, health and stress levels.
Sleep deprivation is a serious welfare harm in broiler chickens kept under near-continuous lighting. Chickens require darkness for proper circadian rhythm function, immune system regulation and cognitive restoration - the same fundamental biological needs as other vertebrates. Depriving them of darkness to increase feeding time causes measurable physiological deterioration: weaker immune function, higher cortisol, poorer leg health and reduced lifespan quality. Providing minimum 6 hours of darkness improves multiple welfare indicators simultaneously. The shift away from near-continuous lighting programs is one of the most impactful and low-cost welfare improvements available in broiler production. Consumer-facing certification standards that require adequate darkness are driving adoption across the industry.
