Aquaculture Welfare

Aquaculture Certification Welfare Standards

Aquaculture certification schemes vary widely in their welfare requirements, with some providing meaningful assurance and others offering minimal protection.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Aquaculture certification welfare standards range from genuinely meaningful to greenwashing. The challenge is that aquaculture spans enormously diverse species - from salmon and sea bass to shrimp, tilapia and oysters - with very different welfare considerations. A certification system adequate for shrimp welfare may be inadequate for fish welfare. ASC certification, the most widely recognized, includes some welfare criteria but was designed primarily around environmental sustainability. The welfare-specific considerations - stocking density, water quality, pre-slaughter stunning requirements, disease management - vary significantly across certifiers and species. Consumers seeking welfare assurance should look for certification systems that explicitly include welfare assessment alongside environmental standards.
