The animal welfare movement has made significant progress over decades, and articulating a positive vision for the future motivates continued action.
The animal welfare movement is, despite its many current challenges and the immense suffering that persists, a movement of genuine progress. Gestation crates are banned across the EU. Veal crates are history in Europe. Battery cage eggs are banned in many jurisdictions. Fish sentience is legally recognized. These are real victories achieved through decades of scientific research, patient advocacy and shifting cultural attitudes. The vision of a future where animals raised for food live good lives, where wild animals are protected in healthy ecosystems, where research avoids unnecessary animal suffering, and where the moral status of all sentient creatures is genuinely recognized is not utopian but directionally achievable. Each policy won, each practice reformed, each mind changed moves that vision forward.
