Livestock Guardian Dog Welfare

Livestock guardian dogs protect sheep and goats from predators but require specific welfare consideration for their working lifestyle.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Livestock guardian dog welfare requires understanding how fundamentally different their lifestyle is from companion dogs. A well-functioning LGD is bonded to its flock, lives outdoors in all weather, and has a working purpose it expresses through patrolling and protecting. Welfare concerns arise when LGDs are placed without appropriate early socialization to livestock, managed with insufficient veterinary care, or kept in conditions that frustrate their working drives without appropriate livestock to protect. Poorly placed LGDs can themselves become welfare problems if they harass rather than protect the livestock they live with. Success requires matching the dog to the working environment, providing appropriate veterinary care despite the dogs' often wary nature toward humans, and understanding that their welfare is expressed through purposeful work.
