Open net pen aquaculture for salmon and other species creates both fish welfare challenges and environmental impacts affecting wild animal welfare.
Net pen aquaculture creates welfare concerns at two levels. For the fish inside the pen, exposure to sea lice, crowding, handling during health management and proximity-induced behavioral restriction impair welfare. For wild animals outside the pen, the ecological effects - nutrient discharge creating dead zones, sea lice infestation of wild juvenile salmon, genetic introgression from escapees - represent population-level welfare harms that are less visible but potentially larger in scale. The welfare comparison between net pens and closed containment systems strongly favors closed systems for both farmed fish and wild animals. Consumer preference and regulatory requirements for closed containment are the primary mechanisms driving transition to more welfare-positive aquaculture infrastructure.
