Goat Dairy Welfare Standards

Goat dairy production has grown significantly, raising welfare questions about housing, kid management and udder health comparable to those in cow dairy.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Dairy goat welfare reflects many of the same challenges as dairy cow welfare but with less regulatory attention and fewer certified welfare standards. Intensive indoor goat dairy systems can create barren environments that frustrate goats' natural inquisitiveness and climbing behavior. Mastitis in dairy goats causes the same pain as in dairy cows but receives less systematic attention. The male kid problem - the majority of male dairy goat kids are killed at or near birth because they cannot produce milk and lack established meat markets - represents a welfare gap that the industry has been slower to address than the equivalent dairy calf problem. Welfare-positive goat dairy development requires applying the same evidence-based standards being developed for dairy cows to goat production.
