Beaver Reintroduction and Welfare

Beavers were hunted to extinction in Britain 400 years ago. Their reintroduction is transforming river ecosystems, but also requires attention to the welfare of reintroduced individuals and affected wildlife.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Beaver reintroduction is a positive welfare story at population level, but individual beavers face welfare challenges. Caught and translocated animals experience capture stress, transport stress, and the difficulties of establishing in new territories - especially if released into unsuitable habitat or where territorial conflicts with established beavers occur. Ongoing management through live-trapping and translocation, rather than culling, represents the most welfare-positive approach to conflict management. The ecological benefits beavers provide - improving habitat for countless other species - also represent an indirect welfare benefit extending far beyond beavers themselves.
