Rabbits have complex health needs that are often poorly understood by owners. Better veterinary care and preventive health management can dramatically improve rabbit welfare.
Rabbit health welfare is complicated by their status as prey animals: they hide pain and illness to avoid appearing vulnerable. By the time a rabbit shows obvious signs of illness, it is often seriously unwell. This means owners must be vigilant for subtle behavioural changes - reduced appetite, altered posture, changes in droppings - as early warning signs. Preventive care including vaccination, neutering, regular dental checks, and appropriate diet is the most effective welfare strategy. Finding a vet with rabbit-specific expertise is important: general companion animal vets may have limited knowledge of rabbit physiology and dental disease. The RWAF maintains a list of rabbit-friendly vets in the UK.
