Roads kill millions of wild animals annually in Britain. Improving rescue response, infrastructure, and driver awareness can reduce suffering significantly.
Road casualties are one of the most widespread yet preventable sources of wild animal suffering in Britain. Animals struck by vehicles often suffer severe injuries without any possibility of immediate care. The welfare response has two components: immediate action (safely recovering injured animals, contacting rescue organisations) and systemic change (improving road infrastructure with wildlife passages, reducing speed limits in high-casualty areas, improving driver awareness). The British Hedgehog Preservation Society and Wildlife Trusts provide trained hedgehog carers and badger groups who can rapidly respond to injured animals. Knowing how to safely help an injured wild animal is a practical welfare skill for any driver.
