Dehorning cattle is a routine but painful procedure. Polled genetics and pain relief protocols offer welfare-positive alternatives.
Dehorning and disbudding represent major preventable welfare harms affecting millions of cattle annually in Britain. The acute pain of hot iron disbudding without anaesthetic is well documented and the welfare case for mandatory analgesia is overwhelming. Yet surveys consistently find the majority of UK calves are disbudded without adequate pain relief. The most effective long-term solution is breeding polled cattle - eliminating the need for the procedure entirely. Several beef and dairy breeds have viable polled genetics; expanding their use across the industry would be a transformative welfare advance. In the interim, mandatory analgesia legislation for all dehorning and disbudding, regardless of calf age, is the minimum welfare requirement.
