Mallards are familiar yet declining ducks facing welfare challenges from urban habituation, lead poisoning, and loss of nesting habitat.
Mallard welfare in urban environments is compromised by bread dependency, overcrowding, and exposure to lead from fishing weights. Lead poisoning causes progressive neurological dysfunction and slow death. Ducklings attempting to follow mothers across roads suffer high mortality from traffic. In rural areas, intensive shooting and loss of wetland nesting habitat reduce welfare at population scale. Simple public education about bread feeding combined with lead weight bans would improve mallard welfare substantially.
