Pochards are beautiful diving ducks that have suffered dramatic declines across Europe. Understanding their welfare needs is urgent for conservation action.
Wintering pochard welfare is closely linked to water quality and food availability. Eutrophication of lakes reduces aquatic plant diversity and invertebrate abundance, creating food scarcity. Botulism outbreaks on warm, nutrient-rich lakes can kill dozens of birds in a single event, causing paralysis and drowning. Lead poisoning is another significant welfare concern. Improving water quality through reducing agricultural runoff directly improves pochard welfare and is urgent given the species' rapid decline.
