Tufted ducks are familiar diving ducks found on reservoirs and lakes across the UK. Their welfare depends heavily on water quality and freedom from lead contamination.
Tufted duck welfare is directly threatened by lead in fishing environments. Studies of birds from urban parks and reservoirs show elevated blood lead levels in a significant proportion of the population. Lead poisoning causes progressive weakness, loss of coordination, and death from starvation or drowning. The shift to non-toxic fishing weights is therefore a direct welfare intervention. Maintaining clean, well-oxygenated water supports the invertebrate communities tufted ducks need to thrive.
