The bittern's extraordinary boom call once fell silent in Britain. Thanks to wetland restoration, it has returned - but its welfare remains tied to reed bed quality and management.
Bittern welfare is inseparable from the quality of their reed bed habitat. Birds in degraded, shallow reed beds without open water channels cannot find the fish and amphibians they need. Cold winter welfare crises occur every few years when wetlands freeze - bitterns congregate on any remaining open water and starve if it too freezes. Managed wetlands where water levels are carefully controlled and open channels maintained provide dramatically better welfare outcomes. The species' recovery is a genuine conservation welfare success story.
