Moorhens are familiar wetland birds found across the UK, but they face welfare challenges from urban habitat degradation, pollution, and conflict with recreational activities.
Urban moorhen welfare is compromised by multiple pressures: cat predation, pollution, disturbance from boats and dogs, and monofilament fishing line entanglement. Research in urban parks shows moorhens spend significantly more time in vigilance behaviour compared to birds in quieter habitats, reducing time available for foraging and rest. Simple interventions - reducing free-roaming cats, using biodegradable fishing line, and maintaining water quality - can substantially improve moorhen welfare in urban environments.
