Adder Conservation Welfare: Britain's Only Venomous Snake

Adders are the UK's only venomous snake and are declining across much of their range. Their welfare is often overlooked due to fear, but they deserve the same conservation concern as other native species.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Adder welfare is compromised by direct persecution, habitat loss, and the fragmentation that cuts off populations from genetic exchange. Isolated small populations show signs of inbreeding depression - reduced immune function, lower reproductive success, and higher mortality from disease. The welfare cost of illegal killing is compounded by the slow reproductive rate of adders, which produce only one litter every two to three years. Public education reducing fear-based killing is therefore a direct welfare intervention.
