Barn owls are iconic but declining UK birds. Their welfare is threatened by road mortality, rodenticide poisoning, and loss of grassland hunting habitat.
Barn owl welfare faces two major preventable threats: road collision and rodenticide poisoning. Road deaths cause immediate traumatic death or serious injury requiring veterinary care. Rodenticide poisoning from eating contaminated rodents causes internal bleeding, weakness, and slow death - barn owls are particularly vulnerable because they hunt the same rodents targeted by pest control. Restricting SGAR use to professional applicators and banning it near known owl territories would be a direct welfare intervention affecting thousands of birds annually.
